Prada Marfa

Prada Marfa is a sculpture in rural Western Texas by artists Elmgreen and Dragset. The installation looks like a Prada store and includes real shoes & handbags from the 2005 collection, but you can't enter the building.

After vandals broke in and stole the originals, the sculpture was quickly repaired, repainted, and restocked. The new Prada purses don't have bottoms and instead hide parts of a security system that alerts authorities if the bags are moved.

I love the contrast of the luxury store set against a backdrop of tumbleweed and an empty highway. I debated adding the landscape into my painting and may go back to add those details later. For now, I like how it stands on its own.
